Spring is here and that means one thing: Spring insects are coming! It’s this time of year when young insects leave the home looking for food and adventure. They might’ve been hibernating or quietly munching on the insides of your walls, but now that the weather’s getting nicer, they’re likely coming out in force.
And since many of us are stuck home thanks to the coronavirus, what better time than to insect-proof your house and yard against spring insects? Here are three things you can do to protect your home from an insect invasion this spring.
Spring Cleaning
Spring cleaning is more than just a catchy phrase—it’s a great way to limit the number of places in your house that bugs like to hang out! It’s great to open the windows to get fresh air, dust off the shelves, steam clean the carpet, etc. But these only go so far in terms of preventing spring bug infestations. If you really want to make sure creepy crawlies don’t spread throughout your home, you’ll have to take a few extra steps. These include:
- Cleaning up any old boxes or clutter, particularly in damp areas
- Deep cleaning the shelves of pantries and/or cabinets
- Getting rid of old newspapers, clothes, etc.
House Maintenance
Taking care of your house is as important for keeping bugs out as it is for maintaining its value. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent spring bugs from coming in. These include:
- Fixing any leaky pipes (most insects love moisture)
- Replace any rotting wood planks with new, treated wood planks
- Replace any window screen with holes in them
- Fill any cracks around windows, doors, or your house’s foundation
Yard Clean Up
Finally, just as you eliminate places in your home that bugs like to live, it’s also important to keep your yard clean and neat to ensure that they don’t make a nearby colony that could eventually migrate into your house.
- Clearing your yard of waste or rubbish—organic or otherwise
- Moving any wood piles at least 10 yards away from your home (further if possible)
- Trim off any hedges, bushes, and vines, particularly those around gutters or growing on the side of your house
- Trim any trees that have branches that hang directly over your roof
